Sažetak
Background: Although the gases, pH and bicarbonates could be easily and precisely measured in exhaled breath condensate (EBC), the major problem in their asassement are the preanalytical factors. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the argonization procedure to values of the measured pO2, pCO2, pH and electrolytes in EBC. Materials and methods: EBC was collected from a total of 30 children with asthma. Two EBC samples were obtained from each subject. The collected EBC was then deaerated with argon in two ways:argon – overlining and argon – bubbling. pO2, pCO2 and pH were determined 5 minutes after sample collection. Results: The values of pO2 and pCO2 were statistically significantly higher than the pH and HCO3 values in the samples that were argon overlined. EBC samples that were overlined with argon had a pH values in the acid range, and the samples that were bubbled with argon had pH values in the alkaline range. Conclusion: If there is a possibility that the volatile elements could be determined right after the sampling, the EBC sample should be overlined with argon and by that procedure prevent the influence of the ambiental air.
