Sažetak
Five species of the grey mullets, including: Mugil cephalus, liza ramada, Liza aurata, Liza saliens and Chelon labrosus, are the main objects of local fishery activities in the Neretva river delta for the centuries. the historical data mention more then 200 tons of yearly catch, before huge reclamation of wetlands and building of large port facilities. In that time this fishery provides major source of income for local community. the most important species of the period was Mugil cephalus, evidenced by using of its gonads for the preparation of dried roe. The production of dried roe in the middle 20th century was few tons. However, the structure of all mullet species catch was not detailed and we lack exact information on other grey mullet species abundance. Recent scientific survey (2003-2006) of grey mullets in the Nereva river delta showed dominance of Liza saliens in shallow brackish lagoons and Liza ramada in the main Neretva river flow. This was accompanied with development of new fishery activities and tools, focusing on these emerging resources. The causes of recent dominance of these two species are not well known. Similar was happened to Liza ramada stock in the estuary of Krka river 25-years ago, when population increase dramatically and later was destroyed by uncontrolled fishery. The propagation of Litza saliens could partly be attributed to global warming and increase of sea water temperature, especially as they spend most of their life cycle in shallow lagoons, where heating of water is highest. It is evident that grey mullets community is recently under changes in species abundance nad consequently of fishery, with several possible causes such as: better recruitment, changes of habitas, better reproduction and finally effects of water warming.
