Sažetak
Varroa destructor is the major pest of the honey bees Apis mellifera. On the Island of Unije was established mating apiary with 25 preselected honeybee queens in May 2005, with main goal to produce drones under the moderate pressure of varroa during mating season. Brood removal was tested as a biotechnical method for control of varroa population development in colonies at the levels that allow normal colonies activity and drone development. During the first season no treatment was applied. At the end of the season, samples of honey bees were taken from each colony and percentage of varroa infestation was calculated with overall average value of 14, 05+11, 23%. Colonies overwintered without application of any method or drug for varroa control. From experimental colonies brood frames were removed during May 2006, to break varroa development cycle. Development of varroa population was controlled on may 27 (3, 27+2, 10%), September 29 (21, 87+12, 93%) and October 21 (44, 79+25, 58%), as well as survival of the colonies. Biotechnical method of honeybee brood removal decreased development of varroa population at the experimental colonies during drone production. At the end of season varroa population reached high percentage causing high colony losses. For the efficient colony management it should be combined with other available methods.
