Sažetak
1. Introduction The Croatian Geological Survey, Zagreb, Sachsova 2, Croatia. The institute has 121 employees ; 78 of them are research scientists with academic degrees, 31 are technical and support staff and 12 are administrative employees. The CGS consists of three departments: the Department of Geology, the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology and the Department of Mineral Resources, as well as an on-site library and laboratory. 2.Developments Geologic mapping and the other means of research are conducted by geologists predominantly using traditional methods. However, some of the data is stored in a digital form. Over the past few years, a handful of researchers have been increasingly using GIS in each of CGS’ s three departments. Besides geological mapping and scientific research, the CGS is engaged in a number of economic projects (new roads, urban planning, water supply, etc.), whose data also must be processed mostly in the digital form. The majority of projects which are done in the digital form make use of different types software, such as: CadMap, ArcGIS, Corel, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access and the various versions of these programs. 3. Problems encountered The main problem is that there are a lot of digital data spread throughout different projects and in different digital forms. Furthermore, the problem is complicated by a lack of standard forms of data entry. Additionally, the data are stored in various applications that are not compatible with one another and the digital databases were developed without any advance planning. Also, it is very hard to find specialists in GIS who have a sufficient understanding of geology. Generally, geologists are old-fashioned and reluctant to accept new methods of working. 4. Conclusions, future plans and strategies Our strategy to form spatial databases includes the following components: standardizing of geologic data entry, purchasing hardware and software, customizing applications for data entry and educating staff. This year, a project for the implementation of GIS technology and the construction of an integrated and standardized geological model of the digital database will be launched. This model represents logical connections between the various types of geological data. Those data which are already in the GIS had to be adapted in order to meet the specifications of the aforementioned project. The remaining data, which are currently on paper or stored in non-GIS databases, also will be inserted into the spatial databases. The forms for data entry will be created as desktop applications. The maintenance of these databases will be centralized and employees will have different levels of access to them. We are planning to design web-based GIS applications about our economic projects in cooperation with other outside organizations. Plans to set up web GIS intranet and internet browsers have also been formulated. Our intention is to put on the web: thematic geological maps (geological, hydrogeological, mineral resources) of Croatia, with a scale of 1:300, 000, mosaic of scanned and georeferenced sheets of the Basic Geological Map of Croatia, with a scale of 1:100, 000, including links to the maps explanatory notes. The current project of the Basic geologic map of Croatia (scale 1:50, 000) will be continued. The field work and drawing of the geological map, and all input will also be stored in the GIS. Furthermore, the associated scientific archive (geologic maps, articles, dissertations, laboratory results, etc.) will be connected to spatial locations on the map. The required software for developing the GIS includes ESRI ArcSDE spatial data server on the MS SQL database server, ArcIMS internet map server, ArcGIS and ArcPad applications. However, it will be necessary to purchase the appropriate hardware. Some of these applications (ArcInfo and ArcView) are already being in use. We will also continue to work with CADMap. The primary task at hand is to train employees for working with GIS. There is no regular GIS-based education at the university level. Upon graduating, the most geologists have little computer knowledge and know nothing about GIS. Some effort must be made to encourage the study of GIS and its implementation in the field of geology and perceive the benefits of it. There is also a plan to establish a Department of GIS by the end of this year. The main tasks of the GIS Department will be the integration of all existing databases into a unified system, developing standards for data entry and to educate geologists in the applications of GIS in their day-to-day work.
