Sažetak
Tourism and economic growth and development have always been closely connected in the Mediterranean area. It has been strongly believed that growth of tourism necessarily leads to the economic growth and overall development of the area. Having defined the relationship between the notions of growth and development and having analyzed tourism growth as well as its impacts on economy, society and nature, the authors claim that the past trends in the Mediterranean tourism do not have the development quality, but only the quality of growth. Moreover, the post-industrial era in tourist emittive countries brought significant changes in the tourist demand preferences requiring essential changes on the tourist supply side as well. The authors wonder if such a change were possible at all due to the magnitude of current conflicts in the tourism environment. Finally, an alternative tourism development strategy for developed Mediterranen countries is considered.
