Sažetak
Banks make trade off between increasing profit on one side and increasing stability on the other. To reach higher profit, banks increase their exposure to different risks immanent in banking business. The main hypothesis in this paper is: Structural changes in banking sector and integration in European Union imply the necessity for strong and effective supervision in transition countries, based on Basel II. Supervision has a role to ensure stability and soundness of financial system, compliance with regulation and to enhance transparency of the financial sector and competition. The main aim of this paper is to investigate does national regulators and supervisors in transition countries apply Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision (precondition of effective banking supervision, licensing and structure, prudential regulation and requirements, methods of ongoing banking supervision, information requirements, formal powers of supervisors, cross-border banking) and have they prescribe model for calculating capital adequacy. Additionally, we will identify strengths and barriers for implementation of these principles in transition countries.
