Sažetak
Flathead grey mullet, Mugil cephalus is species with the highest geografic distribution among teleosts. It is distributed from approximately 420 N to 420 S Latitude and usually inhabits tropic and temperate esuaries, where it has high importance for the fishery and aquaculture. Analysis of 360 specimens of flathead grey mullet in the estuary of Neretva River, south-eastern Adriatic, during 2003, showed total annual sex ratio of male : female=1:1.1. Males were presented with rate of 47.6%, and females with 52.4%, although ratio varied during year. Females dominated during winter and in August, October and November. Males dominated during the spring and in September, difference was statistically significance in April, June, July and September. During all months except July (3.8%) and August (14%) gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females was less than 1%. Average GSI of males was higher than 1% only in August (2, 2%). GSI of total sample increased in June (2%), it is the highest in August (8.1%) and after that rapidly decreased. During autumn we sapmled specimens with empty gonads. These findings showed that flathead grey mullet exibit very short peak of spawning activity in the waters of south-eastern Adriatic.
