Sažetak
The success of marine fish recruitment is directly correlated with presence and competition for space and food with other species. in the estuary of Neretva river (south-eastern Adriatic) we recorded juveniles of five mullet species ; flathead grey mullet, Mugil cephalus, thin-lipped grey mullet, Liza ramada, golden grey mullet, Liza aurata, leaping grey mullet, Liza saliens and thick-lipped grey mullet, Chelon labrosus. Among juveniles of all species less than 25 mm of total lenght Harpacticoida dominated as a food. During winter-spring period we observed significant dominance of Insecta as a prey. During winter in stomachsof juveniles bigger than 25 mm, we found domination of benthic organisms, especially Nematodes. Prey found in all mullet species juveniles was diverse, with more than ten groups of animal food. The analysis of competition showed overlapping of food in few pairs of mullet's species juveniles: among Liza saliens and Mugil cephalus, Liza ramada and Chelon labrosus and Liza aurata and Mugil cephalus. Among five mullet species found in the Neretva River estuary we found that Liza ramada is in the best position: this species recruit in the period February-April, on the grounds where other species were not recorded. The next is Liza saliens, which started to recruit in July, and for two months is alone, before other species juveniles appeared. The recruitment period of this species lasted four months, and other four species only two. With prolonged spawning season this species recruit alone during summer season, when productivity and prey quantity is the highest.
