Sažetak
The aim of this study is to show the important impact of organisation and implementation of vocational studies in Croatia to the regional development. Within the frames of the Bologna Process Croatia accepted the development of vocational studies according to the concept of unity of vocational and educational studies with the purpose of qualifying students for specific vocational knowledge and skills, as well as opening the polytechnic towards the community, especially the local one. The Croatian need for a much higher number of educated vocationals with vocational knowledge and skills gained its fulfillment particularly with the development and strengthening of vocational studies. The problem of regional under-development is visible in a high and long-term unemployment rate, low GDP per capita and its slow growth, undeveloped production, inappropriate infrastructure and big migrations from the region. The vocational studies in Croatia, concerning their aim and concept, shall act in favour of the regional economic development, the basis for such courses being a systematic interaction with the regional economy, which means that the reasons for establishing such vocational studies are directly based on the needs of regional economy and labour market. Namely, the concept of such courses is based on the importance of the practical part of education, systematic and continuous participation of students in all business and working processes within their educational fields based on the established collaboration with entities outside the higher education. This results in attaining ‘ complete’ quality vocationals who are capable not only to independently participate in working processes but also to manage such processes by the application of gained vocational knowledge and skills. The system of pragmatic education provides more quality utilisation of human resources in a particular region, which leads to the polycentric development and to the development of small and medium-sized enterprises.
