Sažetak
In the West-Balkan Region, the disposal of coal combustion residues (CCR) has lead to a significant consumption of potentially arable land over the last decades. In the Region of Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), coal ash disposal sites have been covered with soil of unknown quality to prevent ash dispersion by wind erosion. Since 1992 war refugees used the sites for food and fodder production (barley, maize, potato, alfalfa, beans). The uncontrolled agricultural use of the sites bears the risk of food chain contamination by trace elements. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the cultivation coal ash disposal sites for agriculture purposes. Results of a risk assessment based on analysis of agricultural practices and food and fodder quality are discussed.
