Sažetak
The hypothesis of this study was that monolingual children's L1 perceptual performance will be significantly superior to that of their L2 ; however, a very close interaction is also expected between their L1 and L2 processing mechanisms. To test the hypothesis, a series of experiments were designed with two groups of children (Hungarian-English bilinguals and Hungarians learning English as L2). The results support (i) the need to devote more attention to perceptual processes in teaching a second language ; and (ii) that speech processing even in the "dominant" language of bilingual children might show bafckwardness masked by the compensatory strategies children use in everyday communication.
