Sažetak
The concentration of selenium in serum in 202 healthy volunteers (66, 80+/-14, 43 mcg/L) include Croatia in the group of selenium-poor countries. When compared to healthy volunteers, selenium serum concentrations in patients with ulcerous colitis did not differ significantly (66, 50+/-14, 43 mcg/L, n=45, p<0.05), while in the patients with Crohn's disease we found significantly lower concentrations of selenium in serum (62, 0+/-14, 48 mcg/L, n=25, p<0.05). In the patients with colorectal adenomas the selenium serum concentration was also significantly lower (59, 09+/-15, 05 mcg/L, n=44, p<0.001), and hyposelenaemia was more pronounced in patients with multiple adenomas. Hyposelenaemia in these patients had no relation to location, hystologic type or degree of epithelial dysplasia of colorectal adenomas. In patients with colorectal carcinoma we found significantly lower concentration of selenium in serum of the patients (50, 93+/-13, 81 mcg/L, n=48, p<0, 001). Also, selenium serum concentrations in these patients correlated with the extension of the disease and in Dukes D were significantly lower than in Dukes A (p<0, 001). Patients with mucinous type of carcinoma had lower selenium serum concentrations than patients with colorectal adenocarcinomas, but the finding was not statistically significant. The concentrations of selenium in serum of patients with colorectal adenomas and patients with Dukes A colorectal carcinoma did not differ significantly, allowing the conclusion of similar nutritive status in theese patients with conditions, restricted to intestinal mucosa. Hyposelenaemia could be regarded as one of the impo0rtant factors in colorectal tumourogenesis and that should warrant the supplementation of selenium as an preventive and/or adjuvant procedure for the patients with colorectal epithelial tumours.
