Sažetak
The procedure of digital valorization of prints obtained by standard IGT Fluff test by means of image analyzing was studied in this paper. In the process of paper manufacturing, too short or loose fibers, filler and coating particles do not adhere properly to sheet fibers. During printing, such paper surface has tendency of releasing dust, which causes both printability and runnability problems. Such particles cause contamination of the printing form, resulting in machine down-time and also have a negative impact on the visual appearance of the resulting printed product. Newsprint paper, consisting mostly of heavily recycled fibers, which frequently reach up to one hundred percent of stock content, are especially prone to problems with loose and weakly bound particles. There are number of fluff test which measure the tendency of paper to release such particles during printing. IGT W33 Fluff test is frequently used in assessing this problem. The test procedure consists of rolling the sticky steel disc, obtained by applying the thin film of pick-test oil onto its surface, over the prescribed number of sheets of paper. By this, the dust in paper is being consequently accumulated onto the surface of disc. The steel disc is then inked and the print is made on the strip of real art paper. The surface areas of disc that accumulated fluff do not properly interact with the ink, which results in white spots on the print. Degree of fluff is evaluated by means of visual comparison of prints obtained in above described way with the given standard IGT contamination scale. While IGT Fluff test meets various basic criteria, its results evaluation procedure is highly subjective and not adequately precise. With the use and modification of widely available digital image analysis techniques, which use scanning devices as input devices, the potential of easily expressing those kinds of results in more objective way rises. In this paper, a procedure of obtaining the direct numerical results of dust in paper by utilizing the Image J software is being developed and proposed as a novel practice. Practical examples of the procedure are shown on the samples of various newsprint papers.
