Sažetak
Most aspects of the functioning, potential response and applications of solid state mercury(II) ion-selective electrodes can be interpreted through the theory of electrodes of the third kind. The electrodes respond to Hg2+ ions in solution via exchange reactions at the electrode surface. Because Hg2+ ions hydrolyse in aqueous solution the main factor influencig the potential of mercury(II) ion-selective electrodes over a large pH range is the decrease in the concentration of "free" mercury ions. As the surface reactions depend on composition of membrane material, the experimental slopes and limit of linear response of mercury(II) ion-selective electrodes is not uniform for all the electrodes discussed and "strange or unusual" electrode responses are not expected.
