Sažetak
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ( PAH )are widespread environmental contaminants as result of emission from a variety of sources including also motor vehicle exhausts. Because of their mutagenic and carcinogenic properties, PAHs have been measured in various environmental matrices ( air, water, soil ). Road transport is one of the greatest conundrums challenging the sustainability of our lifestyle today. Mobility is essential for individuals, for commerce, and for the industry. However, this has also created a set of challenges for sustainability of the road transport industry, which we have to meet in order to maintain and improve our lifestyles. Over the years, quality of fuels and vehicle technologies has improved so much that pollutant emissions from new road vehicles have been dramatically reduced. According to some estimates the PAHs emission from automotive sources should account for only 8-10 % of total EU atmospheric PAH emission by 2010. Generally speaking, in older diesel vehicles 3+ ring and, even more 2-ring emission increase linearly with diesel fuel PAH content. However, reduction of PAH content to zero in diesel fuel did not eliminate the PAH emission , because a significant portion was generated during combustion. A detailed and reliable characterisation of aromatic compound group types of ( mono-, di-, and 3+ ring ) is a prerequisite for understanding and controlling the chemical processes in the oil and petrochemical industry, as well as for the quality of fuels. Determination of aromatic hydrocarbon types in diesel fuels by HPLC is covered by European Standard EN 12916. The method used for measurements is “ column switching “ normal phase ( NP ) HPLC and separation of aromatic groups are performed on polar columns ( silica or NH2 / CN modified silica ) with a non-polar mobile phase ( n-heptane ) using refractive ( RI ) detector. As a result of selectivity, aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from saturated hydrocarbons and from distinct peaks according to their ring number, i.e. mono, di and three + cyclic aromatics. The last one with some heterocyclic compound elute as single peak due to the use of backflush valve. All samples used in the study were commercial ones known in Croatia as diesel or eurodiesel collected from various sources at different time during many years.
