Sažetak
The large number of mosquitos in NE Croatia is conditioned by the two large lowland (the Drava and the Danube). This two big rivers make large area for extremly large populations of mosquitos occupy the town of Osijek, the capital of the region. Mosquito control is almost impossible because of a large unapproachable terrain and mines left after war for Croatian independence. Systematic monitoring of mosquitos has been performed since 1995 and some results we present here. The method we used for the investigation of mosquito seasonal abundance is CDC traps baited with dry ice. Traps worked 24 hours in 9 localities along the town, during the season from May to September twice a month. During three years 1995-1997 a total of 81493 speciments were caught. As many as 17 species of mosquitoes were determined, among them the species Aedes vexans makes 83% of the mosquito fauna. The large number of mosquitoes appeared after a rise of the Drava water level above 200 cm when water filled up the space between the river bed and dikes. In the begining of the season mosquitoes emerged in forest appear in mosquito fauna, then mosquitoes emerged in flooded areas occupy the area, and finally mosquitoes emerged in urban area appear in large number.
