Sažetak
The golden grey mullet, Liza aurata (Risso, 1810) appears in the Mediterranean and along the Atlantic coast from the Azores and Madeira to Great Britain and the south coast of Norway and Sweden. It is a typical representative of the Atlantic-Mediterranean fauna. It is common in Mediterranean and in the Black Sea and introduced in the Azov and Caspian Seas. It is common along whole Adriatic coast. It inhabits inshore waters, lagoons and estuaries and rarely fresh waters. Estuaries and river's mouths, as areas of high trophic levels, are typical nursery ground for this species. In this paper we described age and growth of the golden grey mullet population in the Neretva River estuary. Thirty specimens were analysed monthly during a one-year period. The caught fish belong to groups from 0+ to 7+ years. In whole sample, 3+ fish dominated with 37% and 2+ with 27%. The lenght categories from 29 cm to 31 cm are most frequent in samples and fishes longer than 40 cm appear only sporadically. Analysis of lenght categories per sex showed that males dominated from 20 cm to 30 cm, and in all other categories females dominated. The largest male was 38 cm, and female 48.7 cm total lenght. According to values of b constant: b=3.159 for whole sample, for females b=3.397 and males b=3.1, the entire population of golden grey mullet in the Neretva River estuary has positive allometric growth.
