Sažetak
Lyme disease is a multisystem infectious disease caused by arthropod-borne spirochetes of the Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi sensu lato complex. It is the most common tick-borne disease in Europe and North America. It affects both sexes and all age groups. Erythema migrans, the hallmark of early stage of the disease, represents between 70% and 80% of all cases of Lyme disease. First description of eryhtema chronicum migrans by Croatian authors was made in 1940 by Forenbacher, and later by Mohar in 1982. In Croatia, spirochete B. burgdorferi was first isolated in 1991 at the University Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Zagreb University Hospital Center, from the skin of a patient with erythema chronicum migrans. It was designated as P1 Zagreb. Electrophoretic analysis of the Bb protein content revealed six major proteins of different molecular mass (OspA, OspB, Os pC, p41, p60 and p100). In studies made, four genomic B.burgdorferf sensu lato groups were identified -B. afzelii, B. garinii, B. valaisiana and B. burgdorferi sensu stricto. Most often identified group was B. afzelii. Diagnostics and therapy of different stages of Lyme disease is made by dermatovenereologists and infectologists. Since 2003. Laboratory for Serodiagnosis and Immunfluorescence diagnosis was appointed as Reference Center of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Republic of Croatia for the diagnosis of syphilis and Lyme disease. Main goal of the Centre in to encourage cooperation between dermatovenereologists, infectologists and microbiologists, to provide early diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease as well as to educate population about modes of prevention from tick bites, as well as about proceedures needed after tick-bite.
