Sažetak
Crop protection products are used throughout the world within the process of growing and storage of fruit and vegetables. National competent authorities as well as the food industry have the responsibility to ensure resideus from these products are minimized and in the compliance with national and EU regulations in respect of Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs). Within the global sourcing with fresh fruit and vegetables and increasing demands of production and delivery schedule, ensuring compliance with regulations is becoming even more challenging. In September 2006, the study tour „ Plant Protection Registration and Monitoring“ was organized by the USAID Mission to Croatia. This study tour to York, UK enabled Croatian representatives to visit competent UK institutions responsible for national residue monitoring program in products of plant origin. In thisp paper, the results of the United Kingdom national pesticide residues monitoring system in fruit and vegetables throughout the year 2005 are presented. The total number of samples analysed was 1956, resulding in 1114 (56, 9%) samples with no residues found, while 65 (3, 3%) samples contained residues above the MRL. Furthermore, 777 samples contained residues at or below the MRL. The Croatian Institute of Public Health is responsible for pesticide residues monitoring in fruit and vegetables in Croatia. Throught the year 2005, 184 samples were analysed. The number for samples with no residues found was 168 (91, 3%), while 1 (0, 5%) sample contained residues above MRL. The Croatian Food Agency, through its, Central Information System (CIS), collected and analysed date from 17 laboratories in Croatia responsible for control of food safety regarding chemical parameters. In total 422 samples were analysed and 11 (2, 6%) samples were not in compliance with food safety srandards. It is an interesting fact that none of the cases of positive results in mentioned 11 (2.6%) samples was positive due to pesticides residues, but due to findings of unacceptable levels of additives, metals and nonmetals, antibiotics and mycotoxins. The number and the type of food samples analysed for pesticide residues, as well as the number of active substances Croatia, are limited by the capacity of authorized laboratories. In order to enable implementation of the national monitoring program, in compliance with the EU monitoring, further activites are to be oriented on accreditation of laboratories and applying new concept of food safety risk analysis.
