Sažetak
To estimate the total annual economic costs caused by obesity using a nationally representative sample survey of Croatian adults. The analyses included a total of 5 778 participants, both males and females, aged between 18 and 65 years. Standard epidemiologic methods for risk attribution for ascertaining cost of illness were used. Measuremenst were included direct costs (preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services related to obesity personal health care, hospital care, physician services, drugs) and indirect costs (morbidity and mortality). According to the critera of WHO for overweight and obesity BMI (kg/m2) almost half of Croatian is overweight or > 41%, while an additional 18% is obese, more males 21% than females 15%. The estimated annually total costs of obese Croatian adults (N 793 955) amounted to 34 934 020 million per year. Overweight and obesity are increasing dramatically in Croatia and most likely contribute substantially to the burden of chronic health conditions. High prevalence of overweight and obesity have a significant economic impact on the Croatian health care system. According to present trends economic burden is expected to grow over the coming years similar to the other western countries. Effective collaboration among government, health provider as well as communities across the nation are needed.
