Sažetak
One of the most important characteristics of Republic of Croatia is its abundance of groundwater which quality is still, in most cases, rather good. For illustration of groundwater significance serves the fact that roughly 90 % of potable water, that is consumed each day, comes from underground storages. An extensive knowledge on quantitative and qualitative status of groundwater is the basis for management of groundwater resources, especially in condition of sustainable development which is the basis of EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). Initial characterization of groundwater bodies in Croatia is completed. Several groundwater bodies are marked as being at risk or potentially being at risk. One of them spreads along the Varaždin region and is characterized by high concentrations of nitrates. Preliminary results of further characterization of groundwater body in Varaždin region are presented in the paper
