Sažetak
The aims of this study were to investigate the quality of life, correlation with pulmonary function, and the accuracy of quality of life questionnaires in the patients suffering from interstitial lung diseases (ILD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We included 255 patients hospitalized in the Jordanovac University Hospital for Lung Diseases in the period from 2002-2004. According to diagnosis we explored three groups of 85 patients: sarcoidosis, ILD other than sarcoidosis, and COPD. WHOQOL-BREF general questionnaire and St. Georges's specific questionnaire for respiratory patients (SGRQ) were used to assess the quality of life. The groups significantly differed according to age (p< 0.0001), gender (p= 0.00174), and smoking habits (p=0, 00001). Although the quality of life parameters were decreased in all three groups, they were significantly less decreased in the group of sarcoidosis. In comparison with COPD group, the group with other ILD showed significantly better average results of WHOQUOL-BREF questionnaire (p=0.00515), especially in the field of mental health (p=0.00270), social function (p=0, 00042), and symptoms according to SGRQ questionnaire (p=0, 00523). We found moderate correlation between quality of life and pulmonary function parameters, but strong correlation between quality of life and 6-minute walking test and Borg scale measurements of dyspnea. Correlation with pulmonary function was better when the quality of life was assessed using SGRQ than WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Based on the results we can conclude that WHOQOL-BRET and SGRQ questionnaires are sensitive tools in the assessment of quality of life in patients with ILD and COPD.
