Sažetak
Objectives: The aim of this study was to detect pressure pain threshold (PPT) differences of masticatory muscles between subjects diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and myofascial pain dysfunction (MPD) and control subjects. Also, PPT between maseter muscles and temporal muscles in both groups was compared. Methods: The study included 30 patients with PTSD and MPD and 34 age matched control subjects without PTSD and MPD. PPT was assessed, using mechanical algometer (Wagner Instruments, FGK-5), for maseter and temporal muscles on right and left side. Results: Mean PPT of the right (1.47± ; ; 0.58 Lb) and left (1.57± ; ; 0.70 Lb) maseter muscles of PTSD and MPD patients was statistical significant lower than PPT of right (3.79± ; ; 0.85 Lb) and left (3.85± ; ; 0.83 Lb) maseter muscles of control subjects (p<0.001). Furthermore, mean PPT of the right (2.06± ; ; 0.97 Lb) and left (2.00± ; ; 0.91 Lb) temporal muscles of subjects in PTSD/MPD group was statistical significant lower than PPT of right (4.63± ; ; 1.06 Lb) and left (4.32± ; ; 0.87 Lb) maseter muscles of subjects in control group (p<0.000001). Conclusion: In both groups the maseter muscles were more painful then the temporal muscles. There were no PPT differences between right and left site for both tested muscles. PPT of maseter muscles in PTSD/MPD group was lower than 2 Libras which is recommended in RDC/TMD protocol for testing muscles pain thresholds.
