Sažetak
In The Rural and Urban Component of Cultural Identity Radovan Ivančević interprets the sixteen theses which he regards as crucial in questions on the roles of thnic components in the concept of national identity. He sees ethnicity as only one of the components in the culturological notion of the nation and national identity. In discussing national, particulaly Croatian, identity, he emphasises the role of dynamic historical components (for example, the adoption of cultural heritage from Antiquity) and regional affiliation (multiregionality as the foundation of Croatian cultural identity). He refers critically to the fact that the myth of the ethnicity of culture dominates in Croatia at the end of the 20th century, and that national Croatian identity is sought largely in rural culture, neglecting Croatian urban identity, even though phenomena which are regarded as begin "authentically" folk, ethnic and unchanging - such as "folk costume" and "folk music" - are part of "arrested urban history". The author considers it important, in opposition to the broadly accepted romantic myths propped up by the political ideology of the Croatian authorities durin the 1990s, that a scholarly aproach be developed for comprehending national identity, at the level of dissemination of information and interpretation of history.
