Sažetak
Fractures of polymer material are one of the most frequent reasons for the repair of removable dentures. Therefore, there is a constant endeavor to strengthen them, and polymer materials with high resistance to fracture are being developed. The aim of this study is to determine the flexural strength of common polymer materials, polymers reinforced with glass fibers (unidirectional and net), and high impact strength resin after different artificial aging procedures, and thus give preference to their clinical use. Specimens dimensions 18x10x3 mm were tested after polymerization, immersion in distilled water of temperature 37oC for 28 days, and thermocycling, using the "short beam" method. Microscopic examination was performed to determine the quality of bonding between the glass fibers and matrix. Common auto polymerizing and pressure-heat polymerizing polymer materials (control group) demonstrated the lowest flexural strength (91, 77-122, 75 MPa), while reinforced with glass fibers showed higher flexural strength (103, 10-163, 88 MPa) matching that of the high impact strength resin (145, 67 MPa). Thermocycled specimens had the highest flexural strength while there was no statistically significant difference (P>0.05) between specimens tested after polymerization and after immersion in water. Reinforcements of polymers using glass fibers increased their flexural strength, matching that of the high impact strength resin. Thermocycled specimens had the highest flexural strength suggesting that the increase of temperature (during thermocycling) had the effect of prolonged polymerization which resulted in a decrease of residual monomer volume, enhancing polymer mechanical properties. Therefore, prolonged polymerization of the polymer material should be proposed.
