Sažetak
He paper describes principles of bridge and asset management, analyzes the application and development of bridge and asset management systems worldwide, and finally discusses current activities on asset management system development in Croatia. Many management systems have been developed throughout the world to assist engineers in deciding what maintenance is required and when it should be carried out. The existing management systems are in the process of constant re-evaluation, modifications and further development, taking into account the results of the most up-to-date research and on-site investigations. Additionally, the existing management systems are suited for individual types of assets. The ultimate objective in development and implementation of management systems is to integrate management of all road assets (bridges, pavements, tunnels, drainage, geotechnical structures, road equipment and roadside facilities buildings) into a true asset management system. The recently completed study by the Structural Department of the Zagreb Faculty of Civil Engineering to establish the framework for development of an asset management system for Croatian motorways is based on principles listed above.
