Sažetak
Traditional architecture is a vital part of the cultural heritage. Although abundant and widespread, only recently have attempts been made to valorise it commercially, encourage its reconstruction, and promote its use in tourism purposes. One of the best ways of preserving traditional architectural heritage is to valorise it in terms of tourism, that is, to provide for its protection, reconstruction and participation in tourism. In this way, natural and preserved landscapes with authentic and diverse traditional architecture become primary tourism resources. Based on the above, the authors present a hypothesis in this paper stating that by protecting, reconstructing and re-establishing the value of the architectural and cultural heritage and by protecting and valorising the natural heritage, a positive impact is exerted on the development of areas underdeveloped in terms of tourism and on enriching the tourism offering of a destination. The authors provide support for this hypothesis in research conducted in rural Istria, analyses made of the existing situation, and proposals put forward for the protection, reconstruction, construction and design of facilities in alignment with the principles of the traditional architectural heritage of Istria.
