Sažetak
Cancer registries traditionally collect and publish data on cancer incidence in a population. By providing a powerful tool to assess the burden of cancer and evaluate population-based cancer prevention programmes, as well as cancer care quality, they form an essential part of any cancer control programme. The three most important data items collected on each cancer are: topography, morphology and behaviour. Therefore, it is recommended that cancer registries should include pathology reports as an obligatory data item, and the proportion of histologically verified cases is one of the quality indicators for cancer registry data. The Croatian National Cancer Registry was founded in 1959. In 1994, it became a full member of the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR), and the data on cancer incidence in Croatia have been included in the last three volumes of the “ Cancer Incidence on Five Continents” publications. So far, the Registry has been collecting information on tumour morphology from hospital and primary care notifications, which resulted in suboptimal data quality. Therefore, in accordance to the registration guidelines, the legal obligation for pathology departments to submit pathology reports on cancer cases will be introduced starting from 1.1.2008. The data either in electronic or in paper format will be accepted. An overview of the last published data on cancer incidence in Croatia in 2005, on distribution of histological types for selected cancer sites in the period 1998-2002 in Croatia, and the participation of the Croatian cancer incidence data in international databases will be presented.
