Sažetak
Seventeen Eurasian Griffons (Gyps fulvus fulvus), a locally rare and endangered species, died in Croatia in 2004 after consuming poisoned meat baits on the island of Rab. The poison was an insecticide, Geocid G-5, which contains carbofuran and is available in Croatia at farm pharmacies. The death of 17 birds in a population of ca. 90 pairs was significant. This incident of an illegal use of poisoned baits in nature has raised a number of questions related to the ineffectiveness of the nature protection legislation, the lack of coordination between hunting and agricultural interests of local communities, individual attitudes, and a lack of education of the local population. To protect the environment and to prevent the use of poison in Croatia, I recommend the establishment of a national committee and an international convention to address this problem.
