Sažetak
The burden of cervical cancer is considerably higher among the new member states that joined the European Union since 2004. The preparation of the European Guidelines for Quality Assurance started some years ago. This work was recently updated and will be published soon, in 2007. Meanwhile the randomized trials comparing screening for DNA of high-risk Human papillomaviruses (HPV) with cytological screening are reaching their end points and a prophylactic HPV vaccine was licensed for use in the EU in 2006. The organizers of the International Workshop on Human Papillomaviruses and Consensus Recommendations for Cervical Cancer Prevention (Dubrovnik-Cavtat, Croatia, 18-20 April, 2007) have invited a team of experts to bring up a list of a dozen of key recommendations for implementation of cervical screening programmes for the new member states and candidate member states of the EU. During the Cavtat Workshop, this list will be presented, debated and further improved in order to define a consensus statement which will be included in the conclusions of the meeting. It is the purpose to publish this Cavtat consensus and to use it as a convincing key document to be addressed to national and European health authorities.
