Sažetak
The Black Slavonian pig is an autochthonous Croatian breed originated in the second half of the 19th century. It was produced by Count Pfeiffer by crossing Black Mangalitza sows and Berkshire boars. With time, crossbreeds were improved by crossing with Poland China boars. Until the 1950' it was the most outspread breed in the Slavonia, largely used for the production of the fat and traditional meat products. With introduction of modern breeds and crosses the number of Black Slavonian pigs were drastically reduced and during 1990' the survival of the breed was endangered. As a result of protection measures and state subsidies in the recent years, the effective population rather increased ; in 2005 there were 58 boars and 789 sows. The breed is well adopted for outdoor keeping and traditional production system includes the utilization of pasture and forest grazing with supplement of a small amount of grains. Litter size of the breed is low, on average 7-8 piglets. The fattening abilities are also modest, with low daily gains and high share of the fat in the carcass (>40%). The meat quality however is good, with particularly high content of intramuscular fat (6-7%) and high value of its meat products.
