Sažetak
Using culture as a core in the shaping of moral sensitivity of any given period, the paper analyzes various health-related activities from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. There were three main stages in shaping of attitudes toward poverty relief: medieval Christianity (founding hospitals), Enlightenment (education), and the huge leaps in fighting poverty in the scientific revoulution in the 19th c. These points are illustrated by examples from Croatian history, medical texts, fiction and art. All elements of culture play an important part in reinforcing a welfare state and shaping responses to various problems linked to and caused by poverty.
