Sažetak
In this thesis, certain plant species grouped in higher plants (moss, fern, seed plants), for which are reported possible animal intoxications are presented by literature data review and own data notices. General principles and modern understandings of plants toxicity, for different animal species, are also presented. Distribution in nature, ecological importance and veterinary medicine importance of toxic plants are discussed. Because of possibility for poisoning wild and domestic animals including pets, in this master’ s thesis, general acknowledgements from scientific literature are described, also here is presented known situation of toxic plant poisoning in Croatia. Toxic plant poisoning in Croatia is rare event, but when possibility of animal poisoning is mentioned, caution is justified and needed. Toxic plants are plants which contain substances that in small amount can cause harmful consequences. Plants marked as toxic are often used in medicine as medical plants. Toxicity of plants is related to concentration of alkaloids, saponins, anthraquinones and other substances. Certain body parts of plants has special role in animal poisoning. As example here is presented some fruits that are poisonous in immature state while in mature state are less poisonous or eatable. There are such fruits that are eatable, but seeds are poisonous also there are some fruits that are poisonous in raw state, but in such fruits heat decomposes toxic substances (black elder, rowan, wayfaring tree). Damaging reactions caused by poisonous fruits and other plant parts (leaves, stem, root and flower) which are discussed in this master’ s thesis, depend on amount of consumption. Animal health care is based on preventing bioaccumulation of elements, essential or nonessential, to level where toxic symptoms appear. As it is important to understand concentration of elements in food and regulatory mechanisms in animal and plant species, it is important to understand toxic effects of elements. Therefore, intention here is get to know toxic plants that are members of different plant families. Here are presented certain plant species which are the most frequently found as toxic plants with possible consequences for animal health and their botanic characteristics.
