Sažetak
Selection of the most appropriate analytical method for conservation and restoration of old but very valuable historical books demands big knowledge in conservation and restoration techniques, paper materials and treatment steps, as well as a good judgment and through knowledge on advantages, restrictions and possibilities of different available analytical methods and non destructive treatment procedures. It is necessary to perform important insight into artists' materials and techniques applied, which can come only from valuable analytical results. For this reason it is crucial that not only the determination of the chemical composition of applied inks, dyes, pigments, binding media, or paper fibers be performed, but also a through investigation of damaged parts should be done in order to prevent future degradation of historical paper samples. The biggest problem lies within a fact that the historical paper samples are rare, available for analysis in a very small sample amounts, and often very valuable. There is no unique way of selecting and applying analytical methods that can be performed on many different historical paper samples as a routine procedure. Those methods have to be carefully selected and optimized for each individual sample with a different scientific approach, since every historical sample has different background, structure and chemical composition. For this reason selection of analytical procedure is usually a very long time consuming step, but often the most important one. Today the advances in analytical chemistry with the increasing sophisticated instrumental analytical capabilities make possible to perform a complete chemical analysis without damaging the treated historical book or paper samples, which will be shown in this research work. The major advantages and disadvantages of different analytical methods will be discussed, and examples of conservation and restoration procedures for old paper preservation with the chosen analytical procedure will be given in detail.
