Sažetak
Medieval Church was not only the most powerful employer of its time, but the only institution within a rather closed society which made the mobility on the hierarchical ladder possible. What were the chances of a person affected by a serious impediment such as illegitimate birth to make his way in the medieval society? The example of a cosmopolitan Franciscan friar Boniface of Pisa will offer an answer to the question. Boniface had been elected by the canons of the cathedral chapter bishop of the small Sardinian diocese of Sulcis but was soon deposed by pope John XXII (1316-1334) to find himself in Avignon earning for his sustenance in the shadow of the papal Curia. His de defectu natalium dispensation was granted after seven long years, soon afterwards he was appointed by the pope himself bishop of the small diocese of Krbava in Dalmatia. The rest of his life Boniface spent in England, in the footsteps of Peter, another Franciscan friar and his predecessor on the Krbava diocese.
