Sažetak
The biological characteristics of the common two-banded seabream Diplodus vulgaris (Sparidae) from the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea were studied. In eastern Adriatic, sparids are subject to a relatively high commercial exploitation and constitute the main target family of small-scale demersal fisheries. Although D. vulgaris is a highly valuable commercial species, information published on its biological characteristics for the Adriatic Sea are very scarce. In this study, preliminary results of its age, growth and mortality were analysed. A total of 194 specimens were collected at 37 locations along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea during the autumn of years 2001, 2002 and 2003 for the analysis. Total lengths ranged from 13.5 to 33 cm with mean length of 18.5 cm. Total lengths of females ranged from 14.5 to 33.0 cm ; of males from 14.7 to 31.5 cm and of juveniles from 13.5 to 21 cm. Fish aged 1-6 years were present in the samples. Age class 1, ranging in length from 13.5 to 17.5 cm TL dominated the sample. The analysis of the length-weight relationship showed that the value of slope b for entire sample was 3.0826, for juveniles 2.9951, for males 3.0955 and for females 2.9449. These values indicate an isometric growth for all specimens. Growth in length including both sexes was expressed using the von Bertalanffy equation and following parameters were obtained: LĄ=44.8, K=0.124 and t0=2.370. According to these results, asymptotic length of D. vulgaris is 44.8 cm and maximum age greater than 20 years while the value of k=0.214 indicates its slow growth rate.
