Sažetak
Today's world is facing the increasing pollution of all kinds due to the increase of the industrial production and consequently the amount of wastewater enlarges, too. This instance, along with the long-term problems existing in the water supply worldwide, stresses the complexity of the issues. On the other hand, awareness of the necessity of the rational water management grows, which results in shooting for solutions and methods to bring us closer to the goal. Electrocoagulation (EC), as one of potentially effective solutions for wastewater purification, is gaining on interest. It is based on separation of pollutants by coagulation, or flotation, where a coagulant is formed in situ which presents the main advantage of this method. The objectives of the present study were conditions that allow disintegration of an emulsion and the completeness of the oil fraction removal from the water emulsion. The process was performed in bulk using aluminum plates. The optimal quantity of NaCl needed for the sufficient conductivity of the system was sized. In case of the examined emulsion an optimal quantity of 0.8 wt % of NaCl was found, that gives conductivity of 13.2 mS. Kinetics of electrocoagulation process was fallowed at different current densities by determination of the total organic carbon (TOC) values before and after EC. The completeness of EC was determined visually, after clarification of an initially milky, whitish emulsion accompanied by flotation of the formed flocculated sludge. The required time for the process completion was 50 min for the current of 0.1 A, 13 min for the current of 0.5 A and 9 min for the current of 1.0 A. After the implementation of EC the TOC values of samples were between 527 and 530 mg L-1, which presents a significant decrease in comparison with its original value of 14500 mg L-1. Moreover, the mass change of electrodes, volumes of effluent after the sludge removal, as well as the weight of the dry sludge were determined. The weight of removed pollutants increased during EC process, where its values point on the high efficiency of EC.
