Sažetak
When the IEEE 802.11 standard was developed it was intended for computers that had poor demands for mobility. Since then, there have been many improvements in technology that lead to much smaller devices with IEEE 802.11 implemented in it, and with more demanding requests for mobility. To acquire a stable connection and seamless handover two protocols were developed, one that actually manages mobility in IP networks similar as it is done in GSM, called Cellular IP, and a second one called MIP (Mobile IP). In this paper we will describe the handover process in basic Mobil IPv6, Hierarchical Mobil IPv6, and Fast Handovers for Mobil IPv6. The main goal of this article is to evaluate handover performance of the Basic MIPv6 protocol through several tests that will show us the time required for mobile node to travel form one LAN (Local Area Network) access point to another. Furthermore, tests showing the dependency of handover latency regarding of the time needed for router advertisement and DAD (Duplicated Address Detection) process will be presented. Finally, we will test MIPv6 by performing handover while playing a live video stream. As a conclusion, which came out of this test, the handover delay was too great for real time services like VoIP (Voice over IP), video streams, or video conferences.
