Sažetak
This paper includes an analysis of all the available (although limited) data on the nature of unpaid labour in households and families in the first part of the 20th century, during socialism and in the most recent period following transition and war in Croatia. In short, life in the zadruga (a large joint family or clan in which a group of patrilineally related males along with their spouses and children lived together that persisted as a formally constituted kin group until well after WWI) entailed a strict gendered division of labour and hierarchical relations where women were often in a subordinate position. During socialism, although equality of the sexes in the public sphere was decreed, this did not permeate the private sphere and family relations. Lastly, transition (complicated by the war) from a socialist system to a democratic one was not marked by a strong emphasis on the equal sharing of time between paid and unpaid work in Croatia. Moreover, resurgent nationalist movements, prenatal population policies and other public discourses all echoed a (re)traditionalisation of female roles. Based on the available data, it can be seen that consistently over the decades, women’ s central role in domestic work and child-care as well as reproducing traditional cultural norms has often precipitately determined the fate of many women in Croatia. This paper attempts to investigate the impact this duty and responsibility has had on the lives of women in Croatia. It is anticipated that this paper will provide comparative new insights and reflections on both past and prevailing value systems, cultural patterns, attitudes concerning expectations on women's and men's participation in unpaid work in Croatia and how this in turn affected/affects well-being. In addition, this paper specifically addresses the obstacles which stand in the way of redistribution of (un)paid labour and proposes how this process can be accelerated to contribute to well-being.
