Sažetak
The International Encyclopedia of Adolescence is a two-volume work containing information about 10 to 25 year olds in every region of the world presented in the form of composite articles. The articles are organized in an A to Z format across the two volumes, rather than geographically by region (a thorough, analytical index that covers both volumes is provided at the end of each volume). The article on Croatia covers adolescents and characteristics of their development during the age range from 10 to 25 (the age of 25 was chosen as the upper boundary for practical reasons). The article includes the following sections: Background Information: provides basic, general information on Croatia (geography, history, demographics, economics, and political system) ; Period of Adolescence: general characteristics of the ages at which adolescence is generally considered to begin and end in Croatia ; Beliefs: religions, the way they are transmitted to and practiced by adolescents, and how this shapes the development of the adolescent ; Gender: examines gender-specific adult roles for which adolescents are prepared and gender role expectations ; The Self: provides an overview of the development of personal and cultural identity by Croatian adolescents ; Family Relationships: provides data on the nature of relations between parents and adolescents, common parenting practices ; Friends and Peers / Youth Culture: examines the amount of time adolescents spend with their peers compared to the time spent alone or with family ; youth culture, organizations and popular activities ; Love and Sexuality: explores dating, marriage, sexual experimentation, birth control, pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, parental attitudes toward adolescent sexuality, sex education ; Health Risk Behavior: provides available data on adolescent drug and alcohol use, crime activity, gang involvement, and other factors that pose a threat to overall adolescent health. Education: characteristics of secondary schools, gender differences in access to education, Work: attitudes toward work and adolescents' incentives for working (extra pocket money, contributing to the overall family income, etc.), employment practices. Media: discusses rates of media use by adolescents, including television, recorded music, computer games, the Internet, magazines, and movies ; positive or negative influences on adolescents ; Politics and Military: adolescents' involvement in politics ; Unique Issues: examine issues pertaining to adolescents that are especially important in the country, but are not addressed in the other sections of the composite article. The article is followed by a References and Further Reading section, which includes sources used as well as additional sources that may be of interest to the reader.
