Sažetak
Most of the team sports in Croatia are more preferred in male than female population (Prot & Bosnar, 1999) like football, ice hockey and water polo. Some are popular among both, male and female, like volleyball. The question arises, does mentioned quantitative differences reflect to structure of interests toward team sports. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the structure of team sport interests in male and female adolescents. The sample of 3345 male and 3124 female finishing year high school students were given the list of nine team sports to be evaluated on five-point scale, where highest value (5) denotes activity particularly attractive to examinee and the lowest value (1) denotes particularly unattractive sport. Following sports were included: volleyball, basketball, football, handball, rugby, waterpolo, baseball, field hockey and ice hockey. Two principle components of correlation matrix of nine sports evaluations were extracted in both samples and were rotated in promax position. First factor in male sample is defined by rugby, baseball, field hockey and ice hockey. In female sample, the first factor includes the same sports with addition of waterpolo. Second factor in male sample is defined by volleyball, basketball, football, handball and water polo. Female results are almost the same, with exception of lower values of water polo. First factors in both samples could be recognized as factors of less popular team sports, while second factors represent more popular team sports. Similarities in factor structures in both samples are proved by congruences of factor patterns which are 0.887 for the pair of first factors, and 0.916 for the second pair of factors. Quantitative differences in female and male interests toward team sports are not followed by differences in their structures.
