Sažetak
The aim of this study was to estimate the advantages and disadvantages of the effects of inhalation and injection anesthesia on the cardiovascular and respiratory system of the rabbit. The objective was to advise on the optimal method of rabbit anesthesia in clinical practice. The study involved 20 White Californian rabbits 5 months of age. Each rabbit was submitted to two methods of general anesthesia within 30 days. First, injection followed by inhalation anesthesia.Premedication was achieved by administration of midazolame, ketamine and atropine. Butorphanol was used in addition for premedication for inhalation anesthesia. Induction for inhalation anesthesia was performed by intravenous administration of midazolame and thiopental.Inhalation anesthesia was maintained by mixture of halotane, nitros oxide and oxygen.Injection anesthesia was achieved by intramuscular administration of a xylazine and ketamine mixture. Before, during and after anesthesia the duration of cardiovascular and respiratory parameters, acido-base status and glucose concentration in blood were monitored. The respiratory frequency changes and acid-base status indicated that both groups of animals suffered from respiratory depresion during anaesthesia. This was due to depressive impacts of anaesthetics on the respiratory center in brain. During the wakening period depression of the respiratory center decreased. During both types of anaesthesia blood glucose concentrations were significantly increased. In this study inhalation anaesthesia was observed to be superior to injection anaesthesia because of faster recovery, with all parameters that were changed during anaesthesia returning much faster to their baseline values.
