Sažetak
Background: Measurement of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) pH has ben recently evaluated as noninvasive procedure in monitoring of a variety of respiratory disorders. Before utilization EBC pH as a marker of bronchial inflammation it is important to establish normative EBC pH values for investigated population. The aim of this study was to establish range of EBC pH in a sample of Croatian adults without respiratory symptoms and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Subjects and methods: This study included 96 adults, 71 women (mean age, 42.30 +/- 8.87 years) and 25 men (mean age, 43.76 +/- 9.54 years), who underwent medical history, physical examination, lung function testing, histamine bronchial challenge test and EBC procedure. Lung function testing and bronchoprovocation were done using standard procedures according to ERS/ATS recommendations. Inclusion criteria for this study were absence of respiratory symptoms and history of respiratory disorders, FEV1 > 80% predicted and negative bronchoprovocation test. Each participant provided a single EBC sample breathing tidally into a commercially available condenser (EcoScreen ; Jaeger, Germany) for 15 minutes. The pH of EBC samples was measured using Mettler pH meter (MP 220, Toledo) after deaeration of EBC with Argon. Results: Median EBC pH was 7.72 (range, 6.95-8.26 ; interquartile range 25 to 75%, 7.63-7.76) overall. EBC pH values were similar in men and women (7.72 ; range 7.04-8.26 vs 7.72 ; range 6.95-8.1, respectively). Twenty-nine percent (28/96) of subjects were smokers. Multiple regression analysis did not reveal significant correlation between EBC pH values and age, gender or smoking status. Conclusion: This study establihed range of EBC pH in a sample of Croatian adults without respiratory disorders. EBC pH values do not appear to be affected by age, gender or smoking status. Established range is comparable with recent published data from USA showing normal EBC pH in mildly alkaline and tight range.
