Sažetak
Industry-science relationship is considered to be a very important part of the innovation system, and it represents one of the crucial factors in national innovation capacity. Some studies in developed economies show that a significant proportion of the products and processes that are currently sold and used could not have been developed without academic research (Mansfield, 1998 ; Beise and Stahl, 1999). Both industry and academia can benefit from this relationship. Loof and Brostrom (2004) and Zucker and Darby (2000) showed that university-industry collaboration has a significant and positive influence on innovative activity of collaborating firms. Academics also report positive effects of collaboration on their activities (Lee, 2000 ; Carayol, 2003). It is important to understand what drives industry-science collaboration, as these insights can help with improvement or streamlining of these relationships. In such exploration it is crucial to investigate both industry and academia. This paper deals with the industry-science relationship from the point of view of both academics and industry. We explore how they perceive the other side in this relationship, and how that reflects on collaboration. With the aim to propose some recommendations for improvement, we discuss some potential incentives and assess their effectiveness. This paper is based on a field study.
