Sažetak
With the increase in the number of voice users in packet networks, congestion management mechanisms have become crucial for the success of these types of real-time calls and services. Network devices handle overflows of arriving traffic and utilize queuing algorithms to sort this traffic. After this, they determine some appropriate method of prioritizing it onto an output link. Each queuing algorithm was designed to solve a specific network traffic problem and, thus, has a particular effect on network performance. We implemented some of these algorithms to assess their merit. In this paper, we give a comparison of congestion management mechanisms in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) networks, and make suggestions as to which mechanism to use in various situations.
