Sažetak
Oceans, covering around 70% of the planet surface possess a huge potential for the discovery of novel molecules. Several metabolites either produced by sponges or by associated organisms like bacteria, have a pharmaceutical potential. Some of them open new horizons in biotechnology. However, the application of natural secondary metabolites as therapeutic drugs has not been very successful due to limited availability of sufficient quantities of defined material - the so-called supply problem. For the possibility of a long running use of these chemical compounds a sustainable production of large amounts of sponge biomass is necessary if the desired metabolites cannot be synthesized artificially. This can be done by cell-culture, in situ aquaculture or in vitro applications. For all three basic knowledge of the ecological characteristics is essential, especially data about ecology, distribution and abundance of many species interesting for commercial purposes is missing.
