Sažetak
Information is quickly and easily accessible, which gives rise to an unprecedented problem: it is no longer information scarcity, but information surplus that is an issue now. A newly designed knowledge structure is required also by the field of economics which is facing a growing demand. The application of knowledge in economic science is important not only in terms of products or new business opportunities, but it also formulates a critical framework for the development of scientific information. In today's world, companies are seeking applicative solutions to the perceived problems. Growing awareness that investments into education are worthwhile, the need for life-long learning and continuous expansion of knowledge through interdisciplinary approach are all a well-founded basis for enhancement of social responsibility. To be able to tackle these new problems, people have to look for and master new knowledge and skills. The traditional notion of literacy, including reading, writing, numerical and computer literacy, is becoming insufficient for a successful career and life. The acquired knowledge quickly becomes obsolete. People need to master the skill of rapid acquisition of new knowledge and displacing or unlearning the outdated knowledge. The adaptation of the higher education system at the University in Osijek is carried out through the Bologna process, and accompanied by a model of regional development based on social responsibility. In this way the Bologna process has taken the infrastructural role of mentor for regional development initiatives. The interactive approach in the dialogue between University and its environment aims to develop a sustainable regional research programme, as a contribution to the knowledge transfer model.
