Sažetak
Croatia is one of the very few European countries still without a commercial television channel at the national level. Although private television broadcasting exists for some years now, economic constraints as well as regulatory influences have precluded the development of serious challenger(s) to the power of the national public broadcaster. In the press industries recent problems produced by the distribution monopoly have endangered the continuation of the independent press. The Croatian case might well be the proof that, when political constraints can no longer be used successfully, economic constrains take their place. The paper examines different types of control (political, normative and economic) in the mass media field in contemporary Croatia, and assesses their compatibility with a democratic media system.
