Sažetak
The co-existence of two languages and of three separate alphabets (the Latin, the Glagolitic and the Western Cyrillic) are among unique traits of a written tradition which is not well known outside Croatia’ s borders. Concentrating on the Glagolitic sphere, one may say that its striking otherness more often than not obscures the fact that Glagolitic literacy in Croatia has been an active part of the common European cultural tradition of its time. Collections of folk and other recipes and therapeutic instructions were preserved on the territory of Croatia from the 14th on. Written in the angular form of the Glagolitic alphabet and in Croatian vernacular language (with traces of Church Slavonic), they represent unique form of preserving folk medicine. These collections can be viewed as crossroads of religion, medicine and literature because they reflect the magical, the theurgical and the empirical approach to disease and healing. Within our research project the interdisciplinary study of these sources is applied to gain insight into a particular Croatian phenomenon, which is nonetheless strongly rooted in European tradition.
