Sažetak
The article deals with some historical roots and reasons of collecting artefacts in the field of art, and specially in music. Some important Croatian church and private collections in Dubrovnik, Osijek, Split and Zagreb have been identified. Special attention is given to the large collection of Nikola Algarotti from Krk. The ideal of collecting is not related only to specific composers and their works, but also to the entire musical culture and its infrastructure (performers, education, purchasing of music material, music making, printing and copying of music etc.). Some aspects of the musical culture can be connected with the turbulen social changes in the period between 1780s and 1835, especially because of the Napoleonic wars.
